For all Myanmar seafarers transiting in Red Sea, Suez Canal and the Mediterranean Sea areas.
On 31st August 2013, Cosco Asia , a 10,000 TEU container ship , was attacked during her passage in Suez Canal.
Suez Canal Authority said the terrorists used automatic weapons and a Rocket-Propelled Grenade ( RPG ) during an unsuccessful attempt to attack Cosco Asia.
Authorities assumed that the attack was just an attempt to disrupt the flow of ships passing through Suez Canal through which hundreds of ships are passing daily and making the canal a major income source of Egypt.
Within few hours after the event, three suspects were arrested for opening fire on Cosco Asia.
Although no damage was repored in the attack, it could lead to a catastrophe if the target was an oil tanker or a gas carrier.
Due to the recent unrest in Egypt, some extremists might, in the near future, target on the ships in Suez Canal to attempt disrupting or blocking the canal passage even though it is fully secured by Egyptian military forces.
Also, military activities can be expected on the Eastern side of the Mediterranean Sea as a result of instability in Syria.
We, MSU, wish all Myanmar seafarers sailing through Suez Canal and Mediterranean Sea to be cautious and to be safe.
Have a safe and Bon Voyage to all !
